United Methodist Building offers
hospitality to AIDS Watch '96

WASHINGTON (UMNS) -- The United Methodist Building on Capitol
Hill here was the staging area and base for much of the activity
of AIDS Watch '96.
The AIDS National Interfaith Network, in which two
denominational agencies participate and that has offices in the
building, helped host the gathering sponsored by the National
Association of Persons With Aids. Two other buildings were used
for some events.
About 400 people -- most of whom represented secular
organizations from across the country -- attended the May 19-21
event, according to SuAnne Holmes, a staff member of the United
Methodist Board of Church and Society.
Activities included a candlelight memorial across from the
White House, seminars and congressional visits. A display of
faith-based ministries throughout the United States was on exhibit
in the United Methodist Building lobby.
A major part of the hospitality, in addition to shelter from
record-breaking heat, was provision of bottled water by United
Methodist congregations of the Baltimore-Washington Conference.
The Washington water supply has problems related to its treatment
facilities and flooding earlier this year. Some registrants who
are AIDS-positive could have been put at risk by tap water, Holmes
explained.
