Presbyterian Missionary in El Salvador Shot

The Rev. Alejandro Hernandez, a Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) mission
worker in El Salvador, was shot in the jaw Feb. 2 in San Salvador while
attending a Salvadoran Lutheran Synod youth event. Hernandez works in
pastoral ministry with a Lutheran community in the Chalatenango area of the
country.
Hernandez is in stable condition after reconstructive jaw surgery and
is able to communicate by writing notes. The Worldwide Ministries Division
(WMD) is in daily contact with Hernandez and his family, according to Julia
Ann Moffett, WMD coordinator for Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean.
The reason for the attack is not known, though church and police
officials suspect it was a car-jacking attempt. The Lutheran Church is
prodding the police to conduct a thorough investigation of the matter.
