96069 Seventeen Committees to Handle
General Assembly Business
by Jerry L. Van Marter
LOUISVILLE, Ky.--General Assembly stated clerk the Rev. James E. Andrews
has announced that 17 committees will handle the business of the 208th
General Assembly (1996), June 29-July 6 in Albuquerque.
Andrews announced the committee structure Feb. 14, following the Feb.
8-10 meeting of the Committee on the Office of the General Assembly.
The number of Assembly committees is one less than last year.
However, an additional committee -- to nominate a stated clerk -- will have
to be created if nominations for the office are made from the floor of the
Assembly on June 29. In that event, a committee of ten commissioners will
be drawn from the existing Assembly committees.
A random assignment of General Assembly commissioners to the Assembly
committees will be made by computer shortly after General Assembly
moderator Marj Carpenter makes her appointments of chairs and vice-chairs
of the committees on March 13.
The committees:
1. Bills and Overtures
2. General Assembly Procedures
3. Church Polity
4. Quadrennial Review
5. Catholicity
6. Pensions and Benefits
7. Theology and Worship
8. Ordination and Human Sexuality
9. Global Partnerships
10. Mission Priorities and Budgets
11. Church Orders and Ministry
12. Stewardship and Communication
13. Christian Education and Theological Institutions
14. Evangelism
15. Peacemaking and International Justice
16. Faith and Sustainable Development
17. National and Urban Issues
