96068 Stated Clerk Application Deadline Extended to March 1

                      by Jerry L. Van Marter

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--Despite receiving a record number of applications for the
position, the Stated Clerk Review/Nomination Committee has extended the
deadline for applications until March 1, 1996.

The purpose of the extension, according to a statement released by the
committee Feb. 10, is to try and recruit more applications from women and
racial-ethnic candidates.

According to Brian Ellison, moderator of the committee, "We have
received more applications at this point than in either of the previous two
search processes for [General Assembly] stated clerk [in 1988 and 1992]."

The Rev. James E. Andrews, the incumbent stated clerk, has announced
that he will not be a candidate for reelection to the office in which he
has served three four-year terms.

The full text of the committee's statement:

"The Stated Clerk Review/Nomination Committee is pleased with the
progress it is making toward its goal of presenting the best possible
nominee for the office of Stated Clerk to the 208th General Assembly in
Albuquerque, New Mexico, June 29, 1996. We have solicited and received
input and applications from a broad cross-section of the church.

"Still, the committee is redoubling its efforts to recruit qualified
female and racial-ethnic candidates, and has therefore extended its
deadline for all applications to March 1, 1996.

"Any individual wishing to receive an application and materials
relating to the position and nominating process should contact the
committee by fax at (818) 357-0207 or by mail at

Completed applications must be received by March 1, 1996.
