96082              GAC Elects 1996-97 Officers

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--The General Assembly Council (GAC) elected its 1996-97 
officers during its Feb.  24 meeting here. 
 
     By a vote of 30-28 on the fifth ballot GAC members elected Youngil Cho 
of Raleigh, N.C., as chair. Virginia K. (Jinny) Miller of Mishawaka, Ind., 
was elected vice chair after receiving 32 votes out of  58 cast.  Cho and 
Miller will each serve a one-year term.  
 
     Born in Seoul, Korea, Cho is currently president-elect of 
Presbyterian Men and was instrumental in raising the funds to complete the 
chapel in the Presbyterian Center here. He is a member of DuRaleigh 
Presbyterian Church in Raleigh, N. C., and is professor of marketing and 
associate dean of the North Carolina Central University School of Business 
at Durham, N.C. 
 
     Cho served as a commissioner to the 197th General Assembly (1985) and 
was a member of the New Hope Presbytery Council from 1989 to 1991. He was 
clerk of session at DuRaleigh Presbyterian Church from 1980 to 1991 and a 
member of the Bicentennial Fund Prospectus Committee in New Hope Presbytery 
in 1991. 
 
     Cho also served on the Committee on Staff Search and Nominations of 
the Synod of Mid-Atlantic in 1988 and was moderator of the PC(USA) National 
Asian Council from 1989 to 1991. He was also moderator of the Cross Caucus 
of the former Racial Ethnic Ministry Unit of the General Assembly from 1991 
to 1993. 
 
     A retired high school Spanish teacher, Miller is presently a deacon at 
First Presbyterian Church in Mishawaka, Ind., and a GAC member-at-large. 
She is a member of Presbyterian Women and serves as chair of the 
organization's Enabler Evaluation Task Group and as vice moderator for 
issues of its Churchwide Coordinating Team.  She is also chair of the 
Creative Ministries Offering Committee and last year received one of 
Presbyterian Women's Women of Faith awards. 
 
     Miller served as a commissioner to the 199th General Assembly (1987) 
and participated in the Synod of the Covenant Interracial Cross-Cultural 
Experience in 1986 as well as the Global Mission Ministry Unit's 
fact-finding trip to the Middle East in 1992.
