LOUISVILLE, Ky.--Though much of its report to the upcoming General Assembly
in Albuquerque is prescriptive for ills it perceives in the structure and
operations of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), the Committee on Review
also included a lengthy list of "items of good news."
Stating, "The Review Committee rejoices in the work of the faithful
servants who enabled these advances in Christ's mission," the group noted:
nearly 70,000 participants in 1995 in programs at national
conference centers
record-breaking attendance at the Peacemaking Jubilee last August
a highly successful Youth Triennium last July
a new study series for Presbyterian men
a first venture into on-line curriculum -- "In the One Spirit,"
the churchwide study of
First Corinthians
sale and distribution of the "Mission Yearbook for Prayer &
Study" reaching 90,000 copies
increased use of PresbyNet and PresbyTel
three new evangelism programs: "A.D. 2000 and Beyond,"
"Commitment to Share
Good News" and the "Russia Initiative"
the commissioning last year of 464 new missionaries
43 new churches chartered in 1994 and 37 new church building
loans approved in 1995 completion of "A Year With Africa" and the
planning for "A Year With Latin Americans"
a "Ministry in the Cities" initiative funded at $280,000
first events at the new Institute for Christian Formation at
Stony Point
creation of the Presbyterian Youth Connection
more than 300 mission volunteers placed at more than 60 sites
around the country
more than $2.5 million distributed to racial-ethnic schools and
colleges
