95378 NATIVE AMERICAN FOCUS TAKES SHAPE AS ARRANGEMENTS
                     FOR 1996 ASSEMBLY BEGIN

                          by Alexa Smith

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--The Committee on the Office of the General Assembly (COGA)
began hearing concrete plans for the 208th General Assembly during its Oct.
10-12 meeting here.

"We really want to promote mission in the Southwest," said the Rev.
Bill Aber, moderator of the local arrangements committee for the June
29-July 6 General Assembly in Albuquerque. "We want to showcase not just
the Native American [ministries], but Hispanic ministry in the Southwest."

Citing Overture 95-34, which was approved in Cincinnati, Assembly
Arrangements Work Group chair and former moderator the Rev. Harriet Nelson
told COGA the mandated Native American focus is envisioned to be "a similar
event to last year's around the Korean presence."

She said it will include a commissioning service recognizing leaders
of Native American churches. Nelson said Moderator Marj Carpenter has
already appointed a task force to study and review mission and ministries
with Native Americans -- another outcome of Overture 95-34.

Time will also be docketed to "recognize with thanksgiving" the
contributions of Native Americans Presbyterian ministries and leaders."

Nelson reported that Carpenter has also set preachers and liturgists
for worship at the next Assembly, which will open with a missionary
commissioning service.

COGA voted to accept "Consider Your Call" as the theme of the 208th
General Assembly, a recommendation from the staff leadership team.

In other Assembly-related business, COGA voted to

return responsibility to develop the theme and logo for each
Assembly to the local arrangements committee, with input from other General
Assembly-level entities and subject to approval by COGA

encourage all Assembly committees to schedule open hearings during
the morning session on July 1

restrict to Assembly business what may be addressed during
"Speakout" times at the General Assembly.

The Assembly Arrangements Work Group will meet next Nov. 29-30 in San
Francisco.
