95061 SYNOD OF THE MID-ATLANTIC RESTRUCTURES

                         by John Sniffen
Director of Communications for the Synod

RICHMOND, Va.--The Synod of the Mid-Atlantic has approved a new
structure designed to offset declining mission funding to the
regional body.

Total mission dollars dropped from $3.4 million in 1988 when
the synod was formed to $1.6 million in 1994.

The new structure will include synod-based work in racial
ethnic ministries, justice and mercy issues, evangelism, campus
ministries, communications and partnerships with presbyteries.

The synod office staff will be reduced from 12 to nine
persons. In addition to a synod executive/stated clerk/treasurer,
the staff will include an associate executive (for evangelism,
justice and mercy, and racial ethnic ministries), a coordinator
(for campus ministries and partnerships), a director of
communications, and a comptroller. There will be four
support/technical staff members. The part-time position of
associate for older adult ministries, financed through a synod-
wide Mother's Day offering, will continue.

Eliminated by the new plan are the positions of associate
executive for synod ministries and associate executive for finance.
The comptroller will assume many of the duties formerly held by
the latter.

Also deleted from the synod's mission responsibilities is
funding to nine Presbyterian-related colleges, five children's care
agencies, three older adult care providers, and a counseling
center, all in the states of North Carolina and Virginia. A
consultation process is under way to transfer funding
responsibility from the synod back to coalitions of presbyteries.

The synod will continue to have an annual Synod Assembly, but
the number of elected commissioners will be cut almost in half to
70. Also, there will be a 22-member synod council to oversee
business between Synod Assemblies.
