95092   FOURTH ANNUAL SEMINAR ON PARISH NURSING ANNOUNCED

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--Parish nursing -- a health ministry that emphasizes 
wellness education, health promotion and disease prevention -- will be 
explored at a June 26-July 2 seminar at Plaza Resolana in Santa Fe, N.M. 
 
     The conference, "Parish Nursing: Celebrating Gifts," is the fourth 
annual seminar on parish nursing sponsored by the Presbyterian Health, 
Education and Welfare Association and the Presbyterian Health Network 
(PHN). 
 
     Parish nursing has been a key component of PHN's efforts to implement 
General Assembly policies on health care dating back to the 1988 General 
Assemlby policy statement "Life Abundant. ..." 
 
     Parish nurse roles include personal health counselor, health educator, 
community resource coordinator, health support group organizer and 
volunteer facilitator. 
 
     Among the objectives of PHN's parish nursing program are: 
 
     * to describe the theological foundations of healing ministry 
 
     * to explain spiritual concepts that influence parish nursing 
 
     * to develop parish nursing models 
 
     * to describe the relationship between prayer and healing 
 
     * to develop strategies for implementing parish nursing programs in 
communities. 
 
     Seminar faculty members are Ruth Berry, assistant professor of 
community health nursing at the University of Kentucky and parish nurse at 
Second Presbyterian Church in Lexington, Ky.; Patricia Burchfield, 
associate professor of community health nursing at the University of 
Kentucky; Emily Chandler, assistant professor at the Institute of Health 
Professions, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston;  Jean Kennedy, a 
registered nurse and student at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary; Sally 
Ruybal, professor at the University of New Mexico College of Nursing; Karen 
Woehler, an independent practitioner from Crosby, Minn.; and Mary Ellen 
Zuverink, a therapist and clinical education specialist at Our Lady of 
Peace Hospital in Louisville.
