95137          PRESBYTERIANS WIN AWARDS, ELECTION  
              AT ASSOCIATED CHURCH PRESS CONVENTION

OTTAWA, CANADA--In competition that elicited a record number of entries, 
Presbyterian journalists won 13 honors in the Associated Church Press (ACP) 
1994 annual awards contest.  The awards were presented at ACP's annual 
convention here, April 23-26.   
 
     ACP is an organization of more than 200 religious publications in the 
United States and Canada. Its highest award is Best of Class, where there 
were no Presbyterian winners this year.  Other awards, in descending order, 
are Award of Excellence, Award of Merit, and Honorable Mention. 
 
     Presbyterian winners were: 
 
"Church & Society" magazine 
 
     * Award of Excellence in the theological reflection category for 
"Re-imagining God: Reflections on Mirrors, Motheroot, and Memory" by Rita 
Nakashima Brock, May 1994. 
 
     * Award of Excellence in the statement of purpose category. 
 
     * Award of Merit in the convention or meeting coverage category for 
"Re-imagining...God...Community...the Church," May/June 1994. 
 
     * Award of Merit in the magazine cover category for the 
November/December 1994 issue on refugees. 
 
     * Honorable Mention in the professional resource category for "Toward 
an Ethos of World Community" by Robert F. Smylie, September/October 1994. 
 
"Presbyterian Survey" magazine 
 
     * Award of Merit in the in-depth coverage of a current issue category 
for magazines for "The Environment: A Lifestyle in Crisis" by Shantilal P. 
Bhagat, Richard Austin, and John Paarlberg, September 1994. 
 
     * Award of Merit in the magazine graphics category for the 1994 Advent 
calendar. 
 
     * Honorable Mention in the convention or meeting coverage category for 
coverage of the 1994 General Assembly in the June and July/August 1994 
issues. 
 
     * Honorable Mention in the best magazine redesign category. 
 
Presbyterian News Service 
 
     * Award of Excellence in the in-depth coverage of a current issue 
category for "Southeast Asian Chronicle" by Jerry L. Van Marter in the July 
22, 1994, issue of "News Briefs." 
 
     * Honorable Mention in the convention or meeting coverage category for 
the "General Assembly Wrap-up" edition of "THE NEWS of the Presbyterian 
Church (U.S.A.)," June 1994. 
 
"Presbyterian Life and Times" (the newsletter of the Synod of Lakes and 
Prairies): 
 
     * Award of Excellence in the newsletter design category for the 
December 1994 issue. 
 
"HORIZONS" magazine 
 
     * Honorable Mention in the devotional/inspirational category for "I'm 
Betting on the Vine" by Nora White, March/April 1994. 
 
     Eva G. Stimson, associate editor of "Presbyterian Survey" magazine, 
was elected vice-president during the convention.  The Rev. Joe Roos, 
publisher of "Sojourners" magazine, was elected president of the 
association.  Officers serve a two-year term.
