95157 NEW TRANSLATIONS MAKE "A BRIEF STATEMENT OF FAITH"
AVAILABLE IN CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE
by Jerry L. Van Marter
LOUISVILLE, Ky.--"A Brief Statement of Faith," the confession adopted by
the 1990 General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), has recently
made its debut in Central and Eastern Europe, thanks to three new
translations.
Stated Clerk the Rev. James E. Andrews received word April 20 from
Jane Dempsey Douglass, president of the World Alliance of Reformed
Churches, that the "Brief Statement" has been translated into Slovak, Czech
and Russian.
The Czech translation was produced by Milan Opocensky, general
secretary of the World Alliance. The Slovak translation was done by a
Slovakian who did graduate study at Princeton Theological Seminary. The
author of the Russian translation is unknown.
"We can hope this will be a beginning of still wider circulation of a
document which has already been received with enthusiasm in many places,"
Douglass wrote to Andrews.
Andrews concurred. He told the Presbyterian News Service, "I am
fascinated to see such a relatively recent confessional statement making
its way into Central Europe and beyond."
