95212            "ENCOUNTERING GOD" IS THEME OF  
                   MONTREAT WOMEN'S CONFERENCE

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--"Encountering God in Private and Public Places" is the 
theme of this year's annual Women's Conference at Montreat Conference 
Center in North Carolina.  The conference is scheduled for July 4-9. 
 
     Morning plenaries will focus on God's presence in public places. 
Featured speakers include:  
 
     * the Rev. Katie G. Cannon, the first African-American clergywoman in 
the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), now an associate professor at Temple 
University, speaking on "Encountering God in Today's Church" 
 
     * Elenora Giddings Ivory, director of the PC(USA) Washington Office, 
speaking on "Encountering God in Public Policy" 
 
     * Price H. Gwynn III, retired business leader and former General 
Assembly moderator, speaking on "Encountering God in the Marketplace" 
 
     * Olson Huff, physician and pedriatric medical director of the Ruth 
and Billy Graham Children's Health Center, speaking on "Encountering God in 
Medical Crises." 
 
     Workshops will address encountering God in private places.  Some 
topics are "Writing and the Spiritual Journey," "The Gift of the Sabbath," 
"Healing the Grief," "Personal Fear" and "Growing Older: An Unfolding 
Adventure." 
 
     Other workshops will address such "hot" topics as sexuality, feminism, 
HIV/AIDS, and violence against women. 
 
     Additionally, several workshops have been planned on various aspects 
of leadership development and the public encounter with God. 
 
     Bible study, based on the 1995 HORIZONS Bible Study, will be led by 
the Rev. Eugenia Gamble, associate executive for Sheppards and Lapsley 
Presbytery.  Worship leader is the Rev. Susan Quinn Bryan, pastor of 
Sagemont Presbyterian Church in Houston, and music leader is the Rev. Lou 
Bender, associate pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Bentonville, Ark.
