49NCC5/15/96 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NEW YORK ---- Dr. Sylvia Moore Faulk of
Berkeley, Calif., a member of the Christian
Methodist Episcopal Church, has been named to serve
as the National Council of Churches' third Vice
President at Large through 1999.

Dr. Faulk's prominence as a lay leader secured
her nomination to the office, specially created for
the NCC's 1996-99 quadrennium by request of the
Council's General Board. The Board, at its 1995
annual meeting last November, objected that none of
the nominees to the 10 NCC offices were laity.

Those 10 offices are the General Secretary,
President, President Elect, Immediate Past
President, Vice President for Church World Service
and Witness, Vice President for National Ministries,
Secretary, Treasurer and two Vice Presidents at
Large.

The Board asked that the additional vice
presidency be created specifically to remedy the
clergy-lay imbalance on the slate.

Dr. Faulk serves as the North American
President of the World Federation of Methodist
Women. She has held a number of offices in her
denomination, and is the Immediate Past President of
the CME's Women's Missionary Council. She is a
member of Beebe Memorial (CME) Cathedral in Oakland,
Calif.

She serves as a member of the NCC's General
Assembly and the World Methodist Council Executive
Committee. She has served on the Church Women
United Common Council, Bread for the World Board,
Black Women's Agenda Board, and the National Council
of Negro Women Executive Board.

She earned her Ph.D from Union Graduate School
in Public School Administration and Leadership. Dr.
Faulk worked for 18 years as a school administrator
and 12 years as an elementary school teacher in the
Oakland Unified School District.

Born in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, she is
the daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. James Ivan Moore.
She and her husband, Dr. James L. Faulk, have a
daughter, Heidi F. Faulk, and son, Shannon L. Faulk.
