LUTHERANS `PROCLAIMING THE POWER'

"African American Evangelism: Proclaiming the Power," an
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America evangelism
conference will be held June 13-15, Renaissance Hotel,
Washington D.C. "The gathering will be the first in the
ELCA to invite all 200 congregations with 30 percent or
more African American membership to prepare and
concentrate on effective evangelism in the 21st century,"
said Valora K. Starr of the ELCA's Division for
Congregational Ministries. The program is designed for a
team -- clergy and lay -- working together to produce and
evangelism strategy for each congregation. Participants will
hear from practitioners who have practical experience in
the areas of visionary pastoral leadership, worship,
discipleship, community ministry and communication.
Speakers include the Rev. E.K. Bailey, pastor and
founder, Concord Missionary Church, Dallas and the Rev.
Jeremiah A. Wright, Trinity United Church of Christ,
Chicago. Worship leaders include the Rev. James
Capers, St. Paul Lutheran Church, Decatur, Ga. and the
Rev. Maxine Washington, Metro Chicago Synod. The
conference is being planned by the ELCA's Divisions for
Congregational Ministries, Outreach and the Commission
for Multicultural Ministries.
