(New Zealand Churches News) An open letter from the Archbishop of the
Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia, and diocesan
bishop of Wellington, September 1995 (English translation) to:

Archbishop Joseph Duval
President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of France.

Dear Brother in Christ

By decision of our diocesan synod on 16 September, I am writing to you
to express the support of the people of God in the Diocese of
Wellington, New Zealand, for the stand you have taken on French nuclear
testing at Mururoa, French Polynesia.

The synod has taken note of your various statements on this matter,
and those of the Council of French Christian Churches. These tests
are damaging to God's creation. Like you, we are also convinced that
they `do not serve the cause of peace' which our Lord asks of us.

We are with you in prayer and should like to encourage you and your
brother bishops to take up this matter again with the President of
France and his government, so that France abandons the tests.
