RICHMOND, Va.--Union Theological Seminary in Virginia has received a 
$125,000 grant from the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations.  The grant will 
help fund construction of the seminary's new library, which is scheduled to 
open this fall. 
 
SAN ANSELMO, Calif.--Herman C. Waetjen, Robert S. Dollar Professor of New 
Testament at San Francisco Theological Seminary (SFTS), delivered a lecture 
on "The Actualization of Christ's Achievement in Historical Existence" at a 
Valedictory Convocation May 10 at the seminary.  Waetjen retires this 
summer after 34 years at SFTS. 
 
ATLANTA--A gift of $150,000 from an anonymous source to Johnson C. Smith 
Theological Seminary enables the school to go over its $1 Million 
Scholarship Campaign goal, according to Dean David L. Wallace.  The 
three-year campaign has increased individual and congregational support for 
the school.  Its latter stages were boosted by Dr. George Brooks of 
Southminister Presbyterian Church in Phoenix, Ariz., who presented a 
$40,000 gift to the seminary. 
 
PRINCETON, N.J.--Princeton Seminary professor of preaching and worship 
Thomas G. Long has been named one of the top 12 most effective preachers in 
the English-speaking world, according to "Newsweek" magazine, which quotes 
a survey unveiled in March by Baylor University.  The list includes Billy 
Graham, James Forbes, pastor of Riverside Church in New York City, and 
Gardner C.  Taylor, pastor emeritus of the Concord Baptist Church of Christ 
in Brooklyn. 
 
CHICAGO--Brian R. Johnson has been named associate director of development 
for major gifts and planned giving at McCormick Theological Seminary.  A 
native of North Dakota, Johnson most recently served the Presbyterian 
Church (U.S.A.) Foundation as a development officer with responsibility for 
Chicago and Blackhawk presbyteries. 
 
LOUISVILLE, Ky.--Dr. Loren L. Townsend will join the faculty of Louisville 
Presbyterian Theological Seminary this fall as director of the Marriage and 
Family Therapy Program and as associate professor of pastoral care and 
counseling.  Townsend is currently director of education and training at 
The Pastoral Institute, a pastoral counseling center in Columbus, Ga., 
where he has served since 1990.
