Retired Borden executive
volunteers with Shalom program

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (UMNS) -- A former top executive of the
Borden Company is volunteering six months to Communities of
Shalom, the grassroots United Methodist ministry stressing
congregational and community development.
Jack W. Lee of Columbus, Ohio, will assist Shalom sites
engaged in business plans and also will raise money for the whole
Shalom effort.
A member of the Bexley United Methodist Church, Lee has been
a member of the National Shalom Committee since it was named in
1992. Late last year he retired from Borden, where he was director
of worldwide real estate operations.
"This is an opportunity to be on the cutting edge of the
church in action," Lee said of his decision to give six months to
Shalom. "This is where I believe my skills and talents can be used
best to bring about the Shalom (peace) of cities."
Lee is the second person to become a staff volunteer for
Shalom, which currently operates at 103 sites in 24 annual
(regional) conferences.
Earlier, Linda Bayles, also from Ohio, spent six months as a
Shalom volunteer. "It changed my life," Bayles, a social scientist
from Dayton, told the 1996 United Methodist General Conference in
Denver. She is also a National Shalom Committee member, having
been named to it by the General Board of Global Ministries. The
Shalom ministry is linked to that agency.
"This is a pattern we hope will continue and grow," Bishop
Felton E. May said of the volunteer efforts of Bayles and Lee. "We
have so many United Methodists who could devote their skills to
this remarkable ministry." May, episcopal leader of the Harrisburg
(Pa.) Area, is chairman of the National Shalom Committee.
Lee and his wife Nancy have been part of the Bexley Church
for 35 years. They have two daughters and five grandsons. He has
been president of the board of Columbus' Southside Settlement
House, a United Methodist center, and chairs the Episcopal
Committee of the Ohio West Annual Conference.
The new Shalom volunteer chairs the specialized ministries
committee of the Columbus North District.
People who wish to become Shalom professional volunteers
should contact the National Shalom Office at 475 Riverside Drive,
New York, NY 10115.
