A story in the May 31 issue of "NEWS BRIEFS" (#96189) about the
Presbyterian Disaster Assistance Team incorrectly identified the Rev.
Robert Madsen as a member of the team. It also cited him as a source of
information for the story.
Because the Presbyterian News Service believed Madsen to be a team
member and therefore unable to report on it as an impartial observer (as
journalistic ethics require), the Presbyterian News Service reworked
Madsen's story and credited him as a source of information, not as the
author of the story. Had the Presbyterian News Service known that Madsen
was not a participant on the team and therefore capable of reporting
impartially, the information he furnished to the Presbyterian News Service
would have been handled differently and Robert Madsen would have been
credited with a byline as the author of the story. This is a very
important matter of journalistic ethics.
The Presbyterian News Service regrets having misidentified Madsen as a
team member and thereby having mistreated the story he submitted. The
Presbyterian News Service apologizes to Robert Madsen for any offense we
caused by this mistake.

A story in the June 14, 1996, edition of "NEWS BRIEFS" (No. 96216),
should have identified Dr. James Poling as a professor of pastoral theology
and counseling at Colgate-Rochester Divinity School in Rochester, N.Y.
Additionally, Loretta Bradley of Knoxville, Tenn. should have been
identified as the liaison for Presbyterian Women.
