MORGANTON, N.C.--"Growing in Grace -- Growing in Peace" is the theme of an
Aug. 24 conference designed for child-care staff in the churches of Western
North Carolina Presbytery.
The conference, at First Baptist Church of Morganton, is being held in
conjunction with the presbytery's annual training event that day. Keynote
speaker is Olson Huff, pediatrician, children's advocate, author and
director of the Ruth and Billy Graham Children's Center in Asheville.
The conference is funded by the presbytery's Criminal and Social
Justice Committee, the Presbyterian Peacemaking Offering, the Presbyterian
Child Advocacy Network and the Office of Social Welfare Organizations in
the National Ministries Division in Louisville.

DENTON, Texas--Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos will be the
site of the Synod of the Sun's annual Synod Youth Workshop, July 15-20.
The theme is "Tales from the Script: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly."
Keynote speaker is the Rev. John Williams, director of church
relations at Austin College in Sherman, Texas. He describes the workshop:
"We're going to talk about the Bible. Christians have no trouble agreeing
that the Bible is the Word of God. But what does that mean? What's in
there? What difference does any of it make to us? And where do Natalie
Merchant, the Temptations, and Hootie and the Blowfish fit into the
picture?"

LOS ANGELES--Pacific Presbytery has commissioned its first-ever
commissioned lay preacher. He is Grant Roy Brooks, a member of Bel-Vue
Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles. Brooks has been commissioned to serve
the Bel-Vue church for a period of three years.

STORM LAKE, Iowa--On Nov. 16, Prospect Hill Presbytery will sponsor a
one-day workshop entitled "Building and Leading a Magnetic Church."
The workshop, which will explore "new ideas in evangelism and church
vitality," will be led by renowned church growth consultant Herb Miller.
It will be held on the campus of Buena Vista University in Storm Lake.
