AWARD

The Churches' Center for Theology and Public Policy has
honored the Rev. John F. Steinbruck, Luther Place
Memorial Church, Washington, D.C.  The Center
presented Steinbruck with the James K. Mathews
Distinguished Service Award on May 2 at Wesley
Theological Seminary in Washington.  Steinbruck, a pastor
of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, has been
at Luther Place since 1970.  He was honored for leading
that congregation "into being an urban model of
hospitality."  Steinbruck founded N Street Village, which
offers shelter and services to homeless women.  Homeless
people need "a lifeline to hold on to while they rebuild their
lives," he said.  The award noted that Steinbruck "has been
a major lifeline for thousands of homeless and hungry
people."  The center is a national ecumenical effort to
foster research in Christian theology and ethics for public
policy.
