Duke University dean to step
down at end of academic year

                 by United Methodist News Service

The Rev. Dennis M. Campbell, dean of Duke University Divinity
School since 1982, will step down from that position at the end of
the 1996-97 academic year.
A new dean will be selected during the coming year.
After a year-long sabbatical, Campbell will return in the
1998-99 academic year to a full-time faculty post at the divinity
school.
Having been dean longer than any one in the 70-year history
of Duke Divinity School, Campbell said his decision to step down
is a "happy" one because "after 15 years, it's time for a change."
Campbell, a 1967 graduate of Duke, has hired 30 of the 38
members of the current divinity school faculty. He said he is
pleased with the school's intentional effort to increase diversity
among the faculty and students.
Under his leadership, a master of theological studies and a
master of church ministries were established. In addition, the
school's international relationships and reputation have been
expanded. He said formal programs have been established in Peru,
Germany, Mexico and England, and informal relationships abound in
other countries.
Under Campbell's guidance the school's endowment increased
from $5 million to $26 million. Campbell said he will focus much
of his remaining time on financial development.
Campbell said he will continue working toward completion of
five volumes of work he, along with associate dean Russell Richey,
are composing as part of the comprehensive Lilly Endowment-funded
project on Methodism and American Culture.
Campbell will teach and study in Germany this summer. He is a
Danforth Fellow, an elected member of the American Theological
Society and a member of the Oxford Institute of Theological
Studies. He served for six years as a member of the Accrediting
Commission of the Association of Theological Schools in the United
States and Canada.
