Diaconal ministers travel to Bosnia
for hands-on mission experience

by Kathy Gilbert*

A group of diaconal ministers will experience a hands-on
approach to mission education and faith development this summer as
participants in a mission caravan.
The 11 diaconal ministers will travel to Bosnia June 23-July
3 to work in youth houses, a children's program and a community
center as part of a Peace Mission Caravan to Bosnia. The trip is
sponsored by the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry's
Division of Diaconal Ministry and the General Board of Global
Ministries' Mission Education Section.
An experience in a mission setting creates the opportunity
for people to move beyond their normal routines and personal
interests so that transformation and renewal may take place, said
Joaquin Garcia, director of conference relations for the division
of diaconal ministry.
The caravan is designed as an action/reflection experience
for diaconal ministers. The participants were nominated by their
annual conference boards of diaconal ministry and selected on the
basis of geographic location and inclusiveness.
Garcia said this approach to sabbath time provides a
"creative dislocation" enabling participants to become involved in
service, deepen their faith and expand global consciousness and
renew their call to ministry.
To be guided by volunteers in mission coordinators of the
United Methodist Committee on Relief, the diaconal ministers will
visit five different workplaces in Bosnia.
Two members of the caravan will attend the DIAKONIA Assembly
in Friedrichroda, Germany, July 3-11 to report on the group's
experiences.
