Northeastern Jurisdiction
to elect four bishops

                 by United Methodist News Service

     Four new bishops will be elected by United Methodists in the
Northeast when the 1996 Northeastern Jurisdictional Conference
meets July 15-18 at the University of Massachusetts campus center
in Amherst.
     Conference participants also will hear a keynote address by
Joycelyn Elders, M.D., former Surgeon General of the United States
and an active United Methodist, at 7 p.m. July 16.
     Balloting for episcopal candidates will begin during the
opening session at 10:30 a.m. July 16 and continue occasionally
during business sessions and presentations until elections are
complete.
     Vacancies are created by the retirement of Bishop F. Herbert
Skeete of the Boston area; Bishop Forrest Stith of the New York
area; Bishop William Boyd Grove of the Albany, N.Y., area and
Bishop Joseph Yeakel of the Washington D.C. area.
     During the closing session on July 18, all of the Northeast's
10 bishops will be assigned to episcopal areas for the next four
years. Although bishops are elected for life, they normally do not
serve more than eight years in the same geographical area.
     The United Methodist Northeastern Jurisdiction includes the
states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode
Island, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland and
West Virginia.
     Episcopal candidates who have been officially endorsed by
United Methodist annual (regional) conferences include:
     * the Rev. R. Randy Day, pastor of Jesse Lee Memorial United
Methodist Church, Ridgefield, Conn., by the New York and Wyoming
(northeastern Pennsylvania and the southern tier of New York
State) annual conferences;
     * the Rev. Ernest S. Lyght, superintendent of the Raritan
District in New Jersey, by the Northern New Jersey, Southern New
Jersey and Wyoming conferences;
     * the Rev. Tom Bickerton, pastor of Forrest-Burdette United
Methodist Church, Hurricane, W.Va., by the West Virginia
conference;
     * the Rev. Gilbert Caldwell, pastor of St. Mark's United
Methodist Church, New York City, by the New York conference;
     * the Rev. Peter Weaver, pastor of First United Methodist
Church, Pittsburgh, Pa., by the Western Pennsylvania conference;
     * the Rev. J. Lavon Kincaid, Sr., superintendent of the
Pittsburgh East District, by the Western Pennsylvania conference;
     * the Rev. Jane Middleton, pastor, New Canaan (Conn.) United
Methodist Church, by the New York Conference;
     * the Rev. Alfred Johnson, superintendent of the Harry Hosier
District, by the Eastern Pennsylvania conference;
     * the Rev. Susan Wolfe Hassinger, director of the
conference's Office of Resourcing, by the Eastern Pennsylvania
Conference.
     * the Rev. Jerome Del Pino, district superintendent, by the
New England conference.
     * the Rev. Thom "White Wolf" Fassett, general secretary of
the United Methodist Board of Church and Society, by the Western
New York conference.
     * the Rev. John D. Cooke, pastor of Baker Memorial United
Methodist Church, East Aurora, N.Y., by the Western New York
conference.
     * the Rev. James T. Seymour, senior pastor, Hockessin United
Methodist Church, by the Peninsula-Delaware conference.
     * the Rev. Lewis Parks, Chambersburg District Superintendent,
by the Central Pennsylvania conference.
     The Baltimore-Washington Annual Conference has endorsed five
candidates for the episcopacy. They are, in order of endorsement,
the Rev. Marcus Matthews, conference council director; the Rev.
Eugene Matthews, pastor of Asbury United Methodist Church,
Washington D.C.; the Rev. Bernard (Skip) Keels, Baltimore West
District Superintendent; the Rev. Donald Stewart, Washington East
District Superintendent and the Rev. Yolanda Pupo-Ortiz, staff
executive, United Methodist Commission on Religion and Race and
pastor of the Bethesda Hispanic Mission.
