96232 Seminar on Sustainable Development Scheduled
at Presbyterian United Nations Office
by Jerry L. Van Marter
NEW YORK CITY--How to keep economic development sustainable and how to keep
it focused on human beings is the subject of a Nov. 13-15 seminar here
hosted by the Presbyterian United Nations Office and co-sponsored by the
Advisory Committee on Social Witness Policy (ACSWP) of the Presbyterian
Church (U.S.A.).
The seminar, entitled "Christian Vision and the Global Challenge:
Toward Just and Sustainable Human Development," will feature addresses by
and conversations with United Nations officials, church staff persons and
representatives from nongovernmental organizations working in the field of
global development.
Seminar participants will also study "Hope for a Global Future: Toward
Just and Sustainable Human Development," an ACSWP policy paper that is
going to the upcoming General Assembly in Albuquerque.
Seminar organizers say "development issues are particularly salient
today, when the U.N. estimates that more than one billion people live in
extreme poverty. This poverty leads to environmental problems such as
widening deserts. It also has human costs, including high infant
mortality, low life expectancy and increasing marginalization of millions
of people."
With most underdeveloped countries seeing industrialization as the way
out, levels of resource consumption and pollution of all kinds will
inevitably rise. The questions then become, seminar organizers say, "How
can we have development without destruction?" and "Who pays for it?"
Registration deadline is Oct. 14. The registration fee is $120 and
accommodations are $110 per person, single or double occupancy. More
information is available from the Presbyterian United Nations Office at 777
U.N. Plaza, New York, NY 10017, or by phoning (212) 697-4568.
