 Worldwide Ministries readies for `Year with Latin Americans'

ALBUQUERQUE--In the midst of actions affecting mission work from India to
Israel, the Worldwide Ministries Division (WMD) of the General Assembly
Council (GAC) began readying itself for "A Year With Latin Americans" -- a
celebration that kicks off at this Assembly.

    "We're not forgetting our brothers and sisters in Africa as we are
beginning a new emphasis," WMD Chair Sandy Peirce told the GAC as part of
the division's report. "We're beginning a new time."

    The celebration formally begins during the July 1 afternoon plenary of
the General Assembly.

    In other Assembly-related business, the council endorsed WMD's support
of Overture 96-70, calling for a study about participation by Cuban
Presbyterians in the pension plan of the former United Presbyterian Church,
now the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Board of Pensions.

    Other business approved by the GAC includes:

    *  appointing 77 mission personnel and 76 mission volunteers;
    * holding a mission consultation with the Presbyterian Church of
Korea, the Presbyterian Church in the Republic of Korea and the United
Church in Australia on March 12, 1997, in Louisville;
    * considering appointment of mission personnel to work with the
Association for Cooperation in Tunisia;
    * approving four new presbytery partnerships with denominations in
Africa;
    * creating a strategic mission document by WMD addressing the Year
2000 and beyond.

    In property matters, the council voted to:

    * approve a title transfer to the Church of North India Trust
Association and to negotiate an agreement for the Kolhapur Church Council
to continue to use the property;
    * approve title transfers of an agricultural institute, a medical
center and a medical college in India to their respective governing bodies;
    * explore establishing a Presbyterian Property/Trust to manage and
protect properties held in Pakistan.

    The council referred appeals for solidarity of the Presbyterian Church
(U.S.A.) with church partners in Guatemala and in the Middle East to the
General Assembly.
