DAVIDSON, N.C.--Ernest E. Jeffries began his job as assistant dean of
students and director of minority affairs at Davidson College June 10. In
addition to his duties as minority students adviser, Jeffries will assist
Dean of Students Tom Shandley in other student affairs matters such as
leadership training, discipline, events planning and advising student
organizations. Davidson holds a master's degree in education from the
University of South Carolina. He and his wife, Terry Parkes-Jeffries, have
one daughter, Haley.

LAURINBURG, N.C.--Students at St. Andrews Presbyterian College will take a
fresh approach to math and science thanks to a $147,437 grant from the
National Science Foundation (NSF). The grant will allow faculty and
students at the college to design a two-part course for nonscience majors
that combines math and sciences as they relate to today's public issues.
The new, integrated math and science general education course will be the
first of its kind at the college level. The course initially will be taught
at St. Andrews this fall.

MARYVILLE, Tenn.--Maryville College (MC) was awarded a $20,000 scholarship
grant recently by the Charlotte W. Newcombe Foundation of Princeton, N.J.
The college was selected because it continues to serve populations of
minority and/or economically disadvantaged students. The new grant brings
to $340,000 the total awarded to the college over the years and MC was one
of 14 schools to receive the grant this year.

DANVILLE, Ky.--A bequest to Centre College from 1929 graduate Golladay
LaMotte of Hopkinsville, Ky., is expected to bring more than $1 million to
the college's permanent endowment. LaMotte died in February, and his will
specified that the bulk of his estate go to Centre to support endowment for
student scholarships. Richard Trollinger, vice president for college
relations at Centre, indicates that the exact size of the bequest will not
be known until the estate is completely settled. However, Trollinger
indicates that even the most conservative estimates have put the estate
value well above $1 million.
