Africa University launches
education degree, names dean

                 by United Methodist News Service

When the 1996-97 academic term begins at United Methodist-
related Africa University, the school will launch its fourth
degree program, education.
The first group of 103 students enrolled in the university's
new education degree program, will begin classes August 14.
The education faculty (college) joins the University's
colleges of business management, theology and agriculture to
provide a "value-centered" education to students from throughout
Africa. The total student body this fall is expected to exceed
300.
The new four-year program offers bachelor of arts and
bachelor of science degrees in education to prepare future
teachers of English, Portuguese, French, history, music and
African culture, and religious studies.
As more resources become available the department will
include more options, such as business education, mathematics,
agriculture and other appropriate subjects.
Frederick Fadzayi Zindi, a leading academic, journalist and
music promoter, was appointed the dean of the university's new
education faculty in June.
Zindi, a specialist in educational psychology, psychoanalysis
and psychometric assessment, comes to Africa University from the
University of Zimbabwe where he was chairman of the department of
educational foundations and deputy dean of the faculty of
education.
He has written extensively on a variety of educational topics
including culture and education in Africa.
Zindi received both his masters and doctors degrees from the
University of London's Institute of Education.
In addition to academic work, he is also a vocal supporter
and promoter of Zimbabwean music. He has appeared on radio and
television programs in Zimbabwe and abroad. He is a regular
contributor to numerous local and overseas news publications.
