German United Methodists
to build new church in Potsdam

BERLIN, Germany (UMNS) -- During their annual conference
session here June 26-30, German United Methodists agreed to
construct a new church building in the city of Potsdam to be used
in cooperation with the Lutheran State Church.
They also welcomed the Rev. Isaac Amoah of Ghana to lead the
Ghanian United Methodist congregation in Hamburg, and the Rev.
Romesh Modayil to lead the English-speaking United Methodist
congregation, also in Hamburg.
Clergy and lay members learned that the former "socialistic"
youth center in the former East German community of
Trinwillershagen has been reconstructed and now is owned and used
by the United Methodist Church.
The Rev. Karsten W. Mohr was named superintendent of the
Hamburg District, succeeding the Rev. Siegfried Lodewigs. Three
elders were ordained and one clergyman was transferred from the
Church of the Nazarene. Membership in the conference in 1995 was
8,369, down 110 from the previous year.
Bishop of the area, Walter Klaiber, preached on the
conference theme, "Moved by Love." An entire day of the annual
meeting was devoted to a study of church growth led by Lutheran
pastor Johannes Hansen.
