Western United Methodists elect bishop,
assign others to their areas for 1997-2000

SEATTLE (UMNS) -- United Methodists in the Western United
States elected a new bishop July 19 during the denomination's
quadrennial Western Jurisdictional Conference.
The Rev. Edward W. Paup, 50, assistant to the denomination's
Denver Area bishop and liaison for ministerial services in the
Rocky Mountain Annual (regional) Conference, was elected at 9:24
p.m. on the 24th ballot with 88 votes. A total of 83 votes was
required for election. The first ballot was taken soon after the
conference opened July 17, and the balloting process continued
throughout the conference.
Several other candidates had withdrawn during the course of
the voting. The Rev. Marvin B. Abrams, a Native American from Los
Angeles, ran close to Paup through the last several ballots.
Paup, born in Oil City, Pa., was ordained a deacon in the
Western Pennsylvania Annual Conference where he served as the
student pastor of several churches while in college. In 1969, he
transferred to the Rocky Mountain Conference. He was ordained an
elder there in 1970 and served as a minister of churches in
Colorado Springs, Arvada, Cedaredge, Boulder and Pueblo, all in
Colorado. He was named superintendent of the conference's
Utah/Western District in 1989 and named assistant to the bishop
and liaison for ministerial services in 1993.
Paup and his wife Carol were married in 1965. They have
three grown daughters.
"We have much work to do to become an inclusive community at
the table of Christ," said Paup, after announcement of his
election. "I pray that I may be a listening and learning bishop."
He expressed hope that "we will together be agents of Christ's
redemption."
The new bishop has degrees from Lycoming College in
Pennsylvania and from Iliff School of Theology in Denver.
Although he fills a position on the jurisdiction's College of
Bishops left by the retirement of Seattle Area Bishop Calvin
McConnell, he has been assigned to head the church's Portland Area
beginning Sept. 1.
Other assignments in the jurisdiction for the next four years
are:
Denver Area -- Bishop Mary Ann Swenson
Los Angeles Area -- Bishop Roy I Sano
Phoenix Area -- Bishop William W. Dew Jr., moving from the
     Portland Area
San Francisco Area, Bishop Melvin G. Talbert
Seattle Area -- Bishop Elias G. Galvan, moving from the Phoenix
     Area
The Western Jurisdiction has approximately 485,000 United
Methodists in 12 states and the Pacific islands.
