United Methodists assign 10
to Northeast episcopal areas

AMHERST, Mass. (UMNS) -- New geographical assignments were
announced July 18 here for the 10 bishops serving the Northeastern
Jurisdiction of the United Methodist Church.
The assignments, which begin Sept. 1, are for the next four
years.
Leading the Boston area -- which covers the New England
Conference (Massachusetts, Rhode Island, eastern Connecticut,
Maine, New Hampshire) -- is newly-elected Bishop Susan Wolfe
Hassinger.
Three episcopal areas are based in Pennsylvania. The bishop
for the Philadelphia Area -- which includes eastern Pennsylvania,
Delaware and the eastern shore of Maryland -- is Bishop Peter
Weaver, also newly-elected.
Bishop Neil Irons, who concludes 12 years in New Jersey, will
lead the Harrisburg Area in Central Pennsylvania. Bishop George
Bashore will remain in the Pittsburgh Area for a third four-year
term before retirement in 1996.
Leading the New York Area -- based in Rochester and covering
the north central and western parts of the state -- is Bishop Hae-
Jong Kim. Kim has served the area the previous four years.
Assigned to the Albany (N.Y.) Area, covering Vermont, parts
of New York State and a section of northeast Pennsylvania, is
Bishop Susan Morrison. Morrison served in Philadelphia the past
eight years.
Leading the Washington Area -- including the District of
Columbia, most of Maryland and three counties of West Virginia --
is Bishop Felton May. May has served in Harrisburg for the past
12 years.
Assigned to the New Jersey Area, based in Pennington, is
newly-elected Bishop Alfred Johnson.
Remaining in the West Virginia Area, based in Charleston, is
Bishop S. Clifton Ives, who has served there the past four years.
United Methodist bishops generally are rotated to new
episcopal areas after two four-year terms but in some cases a
bishop can be assigned for a third term.
