Florida pastor to head churchwide
Black College Fund office

     NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) --  An ordained minister in the
Florida Annual (regional) Conference has been named to administer,
promote and interpret the United Methodist Church's Black College
Fund.
     Joreatha M. Capers, pastor at Stewart Memorial United
Methodist Church, Daytona Beach, Fla., will become assistant
general secretary for the Black College Fund and Ethnic Concerns
of the Division of Higher Education, General Board of Higher
Education and Ministry, effective Sept. 1. 
     Capers succeeds Ada Jean Jackson who completed her assignment
as interim assistant general secretary in May. 
     She taught mathematics and computer technology at Spelman
College, Atlanta, and Broward Community College, Fort Lauderdale,
Fla., prior to her ordination as a minister. She received both
masters and doctoral degrees in mathematics and education from the
University of South Florida and a master of divinity degree from
the Interdenominational Theological Center, Atlanta.
     "Joreatha Capers holds an excellent and well-balanced
combination of knowledge and experience in the United Methodist
Church and the higher education community that are essential to
this position," said Ken Yamada, associate general secretary of
the Division of Higher Education. "She is a person of deep faith,
superb intelligence, excellent communication skills, and spiritual
maturity," he said.
     She is married to the Rev. John Henry Capers, pastor at
Varick Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Church, Zion of
Jacksonville, Fla., and chaplain at Hospice of Volusia/Flagler
County, Fla. He is also a doctoral candidate at Candler School of
Theology, Emory University, Atlanta.
     "The search committee has done an exceptional job in
selecting Dr. Capers for this position. Her talents and experience
will fit well into the teamwork environment of the Division of
Higher Education," Yamada said.

for the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry in
Nashville.
