National teleconference
to combat anti-immigrant bias

                 by United Methodist News Service

     "Building Hospitable Community" will be a national town
meeting held by way of an interactive teleconference Sept. 24 from
1 to 3 p.m. Eastern time.
     Local groups will gather at more than 68 downlink sites in 29
states across the U.S. to share stories and address the community
tensions created by anti-immigrant bias and racism.
     Studio guests for the event will include:
     * Bonnie Boswell of Los Angeles, moderator;
     * Melvin Talbert, United Methodist bishop who is president of
the National Council of Churches;
     * Rosemary Radford Ruether, faculty member at Garrett-
Evangelical Seminary, Evanston, Ill.;
     * Rosetta Ross, faculty member at Candler School of Theology,
Emory University, Atlanta;
     * Ignatius Bau, Asian and Pacific Islander American Health
Project staff, San Francisco;
     * William C. Spohn, faculty member, University of Santa Clara
(Calif.);
     * Minerva G. Carca¤o, director, South Albuquerque Cooperative
Ministry, Albuquerque, N.M.;
     * Martha McCoy, director, Study Circles Resource Center,
Pomfret, Ct.;
     * Elizabeth Ferris, NCC Immigration and Refugee Program, New
York.
     Sponsored by the National Council of Churches and financed by
a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation, the teleconference's
executive producer is Kathleen S. Hurty of NCC Ecumenical Networks
and producer is Shirley Whipple Struchen of the United Methodist
Teleconference Connection.
     "The teleconference seeks to involve all who want to do
something about the growing anti-immigrant bias, which builds on
xenophobia (fear of strangers), said Hurty. "Global migration is
today's reality. Yet, basic undercurrents of racism impede
community building, even in this land of immigrants," she said.
     The discussion also will touch on the black church burnings
in the United States.
     The teleconference will be produced in the studios of United
Methodist Communications in Nashville, Tenn. Information about
the teleconference and setting up a site is available by calling
(212) 870-3802.
