Carca¤o to head Perkins'
Hispanic ministry studies

                 by United Methodist News Service

The Rev. Minerva G. Carca¤o has been appointed program
director for the Mexican American Program at Southern Methodist
University's Perkins School of Theology in Dallas.
     A 1979 graduate of Perkins, Carca¤o has been minister-in-
charge of the South Albuquerque Cooperative Ministry since 1992.
Before that she was superintendent of the Rio Grande Annual
Conference's Western District and served churches in Texas and
California prior to becoming superintendent.
As program director, Carca¤o will help manage Hispanic
studies programs and activities as well as programs designed to
develop leadership in Hispanic ministries both in the United
Methodist Church and other Christian denominations.
Carca¤o will "help us to make Perkins a national center for
Hispanic ministry and theology," said Perkins dean the Rev. Robin
Lovin. "She will be a great interpreter of the growing importance
of Hispanic ministry in the life of all Protestant churches," he
said.
The program Carca¤o will administer was originated by the
Rev. Roy Barton who recently retired. Officials at Perkins said
they intend to broaden its focus in the future and hope to
increase the size of the staff.
Perkins School of Theology is one of 13 theological schools
in the United States related to the United Methodist Church.
Because of its location in the Southwestern United States, the
school has made a special commitment to help prepare leadership
for the Hispanic church and to encourage theological inquiry
related to the Hispanic church and community.
