United Methodist higher education foundation
and annual conference sign cooperative agreement

by Kathy Gilbert*

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) -- Two United Methodist foundations
with similar missions have signed a new collaborative agreement in
the hope that sharing their limited resources will make each of
them more effective.
The United Methodist Foundation for Christian Higher
Education (UMFCHE) and the Desert Southwest Annual Conference
foundation have signed an agreement to work together for the
common goal of endowing the future of the church, said higher
education foundation president, George Miller.
The two foundations "with similar missions of endowing our
church but with very different geographic, historical and cultural
backgrounds, have chosen to form a collaborative alliance with the
hope of being more successful by ... working together," said
Miller.
Richard M. Brown, executive director of the Desert Southwest
Annual Conference Foundation, also will serve as vice president
for development for the United Methodist Foundation for Christian
Higher Education.
The missions of both foundations include Christian higher
education, but the annual conference foundation has much broader
responsibilities, Brown said.
The United Methodist Foundation for Christian Higher
Education (UMFCHE) raises, manages and distributes money so that
United Methodist students can attend United Methodist schools. The
mission of the Desert Southwest Annual Conference's foundation is
to raise, manage and distribute money for all ministries of the
church including education.
"The process of cultivating donors and teaching people about
ways they can use their money in the local church, annual
conference or in the UMFCHE is the same," Brown said. "We try to
help people think about the church in their estate planning. We
work with folks who have the financial impact to benefit any
ministry of the church. Ultimately it is up to the donor how their
money will be used."
Carolyn Warner, chairperson of the UMFCHE board of trustees,
said she is cautiously optimistic but very hopeful about the
agreement.
"It is our collective vision that this partnership will not
only be successful but will set an example for other United
Methodist organizations to follow in their development programs,"
Miller said.
