Buchanan outlines three focus points for year

The Rev. John M. Buchanan outlined three things he would like to see
happen during his year as moderator of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) to
move the church toward the vision he has for it.

At a press conference immediately following his election, and after
first saying he wasn't sure how much power the moderator has to accomplish
changes, he said he would like to see conversation stimulated on new church
development and redevelopment, on the denomination's colleges, and on
communications.

"I do believe we've exhausted the usefulness of an old model of being
the church in the city and in rural areas," he said, "and until we address
that with all the creativity and intelligence we can muster, we are going
to continue to find ourselves not only in a membership decline, but in a
depressed situation. I think we've got the intellectual resources to
address that. I'd love to see some very creative and smart Presbyterians
sit around a table and come up with new models of urban church...

"I hope a similar conversation can be stimulated in the Presbyterian
church about our colleges and this whole matter of somehow reinventing
campus ministry...

"And...I hope we can continue this conversation about communicating
with the Presbyterian family." He expressed appreciation for the work of
the communications office and said, "I think we're making progress, but I
think we have not yet solved the communications deficit."
