Presbyterians attend PMM/PEMA luncheon
ALBUQUERQUE--Thirty-five media interested Presbyterians gathered for the
11th annual Presbyterian Media Mission/Presbyterian Electronic Media
Association luncheon. Gregg Hartung, executive director of Presbyterian
Media Mission, opened the meeting with a report of activities of PMM since
last year. Hartung reported that the popularity of the 15- and 30-minute
versions of PMM's program "Passages" has grown rapidly with many stations
throughout the 640 station network.
Another significant achievement this year is recognition by one of the
oldest film festivals in the country, the Houston Film Festival. Of some
4,000 entries from 38 countries around the world, the 90-second version of
"Passages" was rated number one for the 90-second commercial category.
The high point of Hartung's report came with the news that a challenge
grant for $260,000 had been received for PMM, which would in effect double
the budget. Donations of $95,000 have already been received toward the
$130,000 needed to meet the challenge.
Gary Luhr, associate director for communications of the General
Assembly Council of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), the keynote speaker,
gave an update on the work and plans of the office of communications. This
office provides oversight of the Presbyterian News Service, the office of
church and public relations, Presbyterians Today, and Monday Morning. Luhr
concluded his summary with news of the Presbyterian participation in
cyberspace, a medium which Luhr believes affords both the ability of the
church to listen to people as well as talk to them and to strengthen
connectedness.
