Presbyterian men are called to mentor the young

Father Richard Rohr, a Franciscan priest of Our Lady of Guadalupe and
founder of the Center for Action and Contemplation in Albuquerque,
addressed the luncheon sponsored by Presbyterian Men on July 1, 1996. His
theme was that "no great civilization survives without passing the
traditions from the elders to the young." In speaking of the role of men as
mentors to young men, he noted: "Patriarchy and masculinity are not the
same. Patriarchy is deteriorated masculinity." He also noted that many men
feel, and probably rightly so, that women are far ahead of them in
addressing the issues of identity and spirituality.

Addressing the luncheon group of 50 - 60 men and women, Father Rohr
identified five messages that youth need to hear: 1. Life is hard. 2. You
are going to die. 3. You are not that important. 4. You are not in control.
5 Your life is not about you.

He pointed out that some of the anger of the 60s was brought about
because many of the elders had nothing to pass on having bought into the
western cultural belief in progress and self-improvement. He called for
mentors who will help pass on the mystery.
