Committee to consider COCU Tuesday morning

ALBUQUERQUE--The Assembly committee on Catholicity is scheduled to consider
its response to the Consultation on Church Union (COCU) proposal during its
opening session starting at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday.

The committee will be considering constitutional amendments which would
enable the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)'s participating in COCU. A set of
similar amendments was presented to the 207th (1995) General Assembly, but
was sent back to the special committee on COCU for more work.

The Catholicity committee has already spent many hours listening to
background on the issue. They also spent an hour Sunday evening listening
to ten proponents and ten opponents of the COCU proposals.

The committee also met in joint session with the Assembly committee on
Church Orders Monday afternoon to hear presentations on COCU, the ongoing
review of "A Proposal for Considering the Theology and Practice of
Ordination in the PC(USA)," and the proposal to broaden the roles of
commissioned lay pastors.

Maria Price, chair of the Catholicity committee, noted that there was
the potential for conflict between the two committee's reports and that was
the reason for the joint session.
