    Genevans emphasize education and information

Promising education, information and a concern for process rather than
issues, the second annual banquet of the Genevans drew a large crowd today.
Bill Giles, coordinator for the Genevans at this years' Assembly,
introduced the area representatives and briefly outlined the work of this
three year old organization which is committed to helping Presbyterians
make informed decisions in a timely manner.

Former moderator, Marj Carpenter, who has spent her entire life as a
communicator, addressed the group with stories of her visits to mission
sites as moderator. She expressed concern that the church not make hasty
and foolish decisions which might jeopardize mission outreach.

Marj regaled the group with stories of her experiences in North Korea,
Venezuela, Ireland, the Ivory Coast and South Korea. Many times she was
closer to danger than she knew causing her family to wonder if these things
just happened or if she might have caused them. Highlights of the year for
her were Easter Sunday in North Korea, the witness of Presbyterians as
they fight for survival in Venezuela, conveying our heartfelt wish for
peace in Ireland and celebrating the ordination of women in South Korea.
Recounting the funniest thing that happened in her travels this year, she
told of a planned flight of Ten Pigeons for Peace - only one of which
actually became airborne. Another one died and eight walked off the job.
A parable of sorts!

Thanking the Assembly for the privilege of representing the church this
year, Marj vowed that she will still be here tomorrow and into the future,
continuing to spread the good news of mission.

The Genevans awarded her a lifetime membership with no dues required.
