Kirkpatrick is committee's choice for Stated Clerk

ALBUQUERQUE--The Rev. Clifton Kirkpatrick, who has already been nominated
once for Stated Clerk of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) by the Stated
Clerk Review/Nomination Committee, is still the top candidate to succeed
the Rev. James Andrews as the denomination's top ecclesiastical officer.

The committee -- enlarged with the addition of 10 commissioners from
the 208th General Assembly -- interviewed Kirkpatrick and four others who
were nominated from the floor of the Assembly last Saturday. It also heard
proponents of the candidates and reviewed their qualifications.

The other candidates are the Rev. W. Clark Chamberlain of Houston,
Texas; the Rev. Richard Dolin of Louisville, Ky.; John D. Matta of
Pittsburgh, Pa.; and James B. Railing of Scottsburg, Ind.

While the 19-member committee's endorsement of Kirkpatrick, director of
the Worldwide Ministries Division, was not unanimous, its report indicates
that opposition to the nomination was not directed toward Kirkpatrick, but
to the process. The committee is also recommending that the committee on
the Office of the General Assembly review that nomination process.

Election of the stated clerk is scheduled for 9:55 a.m. Friday.
