Women have published magazines for 125 years

ALBUQUERQUE--Responding to a congratulatory commissioners' resolution,
Barbara Roche addressed the Stewardship and Communications committee of the
General Assembly. Roche is the editor of Horizons, the magazine of
Presbyterian Women. She noted that in 1871, two magazines were published
by and for women as aids to the great emphasis women were beginning to
place on church missions in the years following the Civil War. One of
these, Woman's Work for Woman, was published in Philadelphia; the other,
Our Mission Field, was published in Whitehall, N.Y.

Roche noted that for 125 years since that time, "women have owned and
published magazines in the Presbyterian Church." When she told the
committee that Horizons is a "solvent" journal, several committee members
smiled appreciatively.

Roche also is responsible for Horizons Bible Study, the annual guide
for Presbyterian Women's groups in congregations throughout the church.
She described that publication as "probably the most widely used Bible
study in the whole Presbyterian Church." Like few other journals in the
church, Horizons Bible Study communicates in English, Spanish, Korean,
braille, and through audio cassettes. Roche was congratulated by committee
chairperson Thomas Huser for her contribution to the task of communication
not only for the good of Presbyterian Women, but for the good of all
Presbyterians.
