                        For GAC Committees

                      by Jerry L. Van Marter

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--Acting quickly in response to the 208th General Assembly's
decision earlier this month to expand the size of the General Assembly
Council (GAC), the Council's executive committee has approved a plan for a
corresponding increase in the size of the GAC's committees.

The Assembly approved a recommendation from its Quadrennial Committee
on Review to expand the membership of the Council by adding an additional
25 seats designated for presbytery representatives. Those new seats plus
the addition of the moderator of Presbyterian Women (PW) as a full member,
a move that was approved by a majority of the presbyteries during the past
year, increases voting membership on the GAC to 97 persons.

Thus, beginning with its Sept. 25-28 meeting, the Council will include
the current and two immediate past moderators of the General Assembly, 16
members from synods (one from each), 50 members from presbyteries (up from
25, on a rotating basis), 25 at-large members, two youth/young adult
members and the PW moderator.

To incorporate the new members, the executive committee voted to
increase membership on the executive committee from seven to nine persons;
the three division committees -- Worldwide Ministries, National Ministries
and Congregational Ministries -- from 15 to 21 persons; the Corporate and
Administrative Services Committee from seven to nine persons; and the
internal audit committee from three to five persons.

GAC liaison assignments to other entities will remain the same as
currently: one person each to the Board of Pensions, the Presbyterian
Church (U.S.A.) Foundation and the Presbyterian Publishing Corporation; and
three persons each to the Advisory Committee on Social Witness Policy and
the Committee on the Office of the General Assembly.

The current General Assembly moderator is not assigned to a committee
or as a liaison.

The GAC's nominating committee meets July 25-26 in Chicago to put
together a proposed slate of committee and liaison assignments for the
Council to approve in September.

Also during its July 17 conference call meeting, the executive
committee

heard the proposed time-line for selection of an interim
executive director of the GAC
concurred with GAC chair Youngil Cho's appointment of the Rev.
Frank Diaz as acting
executive director between now and the hiring of the interim
executive director
reviewed the plans for election of search committees for a new
installed GAC executive
director, to succeed the Rev. James D. Brown, and director for
the Worldwide
Ministries Division, to succeed the Rev. Clifton Kirkpatrick, who
was elected stated
          clerk
heard Cho's initial plans for a celebration to honor Brown's four
years of service as
GAC executive director -- the celebration will take place Sept.
28 during the GAC
          meeting.
