District attorney announces
he will not block Grady's appeal

                 by United Methodist News Service

The Rev. Nathaniel T. Grady, who was freed July 11 after
serving 10 years in prison, moved closer to exoneration with the
Aug. 7 decision by the Bronx district attorney not to pursue the
case by appealing the federal court decision that set Grady free.
At his 1986 trial on charges of sexually abusing young
children at a day care center and throughout his incarceration,
Grady, now 58, has maintained his innocence.
A member of the United Methodist Church's New York Annual
Conference, Grady was a recognized civil rights leader in
Westchester County in the 1970s and 1980s. The former police
chaplain and pastor of St. Luke's United Methodist Church in New
Rochelle, N.Y., was released in July on a $200,000 bond.
Grady and his attorney have indicated that they will continue
to pursue Grady's appeal in the state appellate division,
questioning the validity of the indictment.
U.S. District Court Judge John G. Koeltl said in a June 24
opinion that the state appellate division must hear Grady's appeal
and predicted, "At this time, the likelihood of success is
undeniable."
