Death ends Lula Garrett's
career with missions agency

NEW YORK (UMNS) -- Lula M. Garrett, 58, an executive with the
United Methodist Board of Global Ministries since 1974, died Aug.
22 of cancer at her home in Jersey City, N.J.
Her funeral is to be held Aug. 28 at Laster Chapel United
Methodist Church in College Park, Ga., where she was reared. A
memorial service is being planned at the Board of Global
Ministries for early September.
Garrett joined the missions agency as assistant general
secretary for institutional ministries in the National Division
and for decades was an ex officio member of the denomination's
University Senate, designated by the Board of Global Ministries to
represent its interests in those institutions originally founded
as mission schools.
Her most recent appointment was that of coordinator of
missionary support services with the World Division.
Previous to 1974, Garrett had been executive director of the
Montclair-North Essex YWCA in New Jersey and had taught in the
Georgia public schools.
Garrett earned her bachelor's degree from Spelman College and
her master's degree from Scarritt College for Christian Workers.
Sue Bennett College, a United Methodist-related two-year
institution, awarded her an honorary doctorate in recognition of
her many years of service to humanity and the United Methodist
Church.
She had served as a non-governmental organization
representative to the United Nations for the International
Federation of Settlements and was involved in civic endeavors in
New Jersey, including the New Jersey Association for Historical
Preservation and the Newark Museum.
Garrett is survived by her mother, Claudia Garrett; two
brothers, Robert Willie Lee Garrett and Arthur Wade Garrett; six
nieces and a nephew, all of the Atlanta area.
