New African bishop elected,
assigned to North Shaba Area

                 by United Methodist News Service

     The Rev. Ntambo Nkulu Ntanda, 49, was elected a bishop of the
United Methodist Church Aug. 28 during sessions of the Zaire
Central Conference held in Wembo-Nyama, and was assigned to
supervise the North Shaba Area.
     Since 1992, Ntambo has been senior director at Kamina-Ville
(Zaire) United Methodist Church.  He is credited with starting 157
churches in the Bukama and Lubudi region of Zaire and two churches
in Nairobi, Kenya.
     Ntambo has been an elementary school teacher, pastor,
Christian education director, district superintendent and
secretary to the bishop.
     A governing board member of the church's New York-based Board
of Global Ministries, Ntambo was an interpreter at the church's
1992 General Conference in Louisville, Ky.
     A Christian since childhood, Ntanda attended seminary in
Mulumgwishi and earned his divinity degree from Nairobi (Kenya)
International School of Theology.
     The new bishop and his wife Nshimba Nkulu have three sons and
five daughters.
