LUTHER INSTITUTE HONORS FIVE

The Luther Institute will honor five Lutherans -- from the U.S.
Senate to the studios of Norway.  Lois Rand, Sidney Rand, U.S.
Senator Paul Simon (D-Ill.), the Rev. Krister Stendahl and Liv
Ullmann will receive Wittenberg Awards for their contributions to
church and society.  The awards will be presented Sept. 18 in
Washington, D.C.  Lois Rand is a renowned musician who speaks and
writes on issues of health care, aging, arts, volunteerism,
religion and Scandinavia.  Sidney Rand is a former U.S.
Ambassador to Norway and retired president of St. Olaf College,
Northfield, Minn., a college of the Evangelical Lutheran Church
in America.  Simon is an active member of the Lutheran Church-
Missouri Synod, holds 37 honorary degrees, has written 14 books,
and serves on the budget, foreign relations, judiciary and labor
and human resources committees of the U.S. Senate.  Stendahl is
retired bishop of The Church of Sweden and current Andrew Mellon
Professor of Divinity at Harvard University.  Ullmann is an
active lay woman, actress, film director, best-selling author,
Goodwill ambassador for UNICEF and vice president of the
International Rescue Committee.  The Luther Institute in an
inter-Lutheran organization dedicated to the church's presence in
ministry and witness in those places where decisions are made
which often impact the course of history.
