Focus of Television Program

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--"Children and Violence: Toward Solutions," produced by the
Episcopal Church for the National Council of Churches, will air on ABC
television network stations Sept. 29. The program takes a close look at
the violence that pervades the lives of young people today.
NCC spokesperson Mary Byrne Hoffmann says of the program, "Not just
simply a growing roster of predators and victims, of drive-by shootings and
parental abuse, the violence done to children and by children is a long
story that tells of increasing poverty and neglect among our children."
Hoffmann says the escalating violence "also reveals a growing sense of
apathy and hopelessness to their plight that points fingers of condemnation
rather than opens arms of understanding."
That's the point at which "Children and Violence" picks up the story,
telling about people and communities of faith who have made extraordinary
efforts to reach out to children and counter the violence in their lives.
The program is produced and directed by Martin Doblmeier of Journey Films
in Alexandria, Va.
"Children and Violence" is the first program in the 1996-97 "Vision
and Values" series. Other programs in the series include a profile of Pope
John Paul II, produced by the United States Catholic Conference, Oct. 13; a
show about the U.S. space program produced by the Southern Baptist Radio
and Television Commission, Dec. 29; and a program featuring the
environmental awareness group Outward Bound, produced by The Jewish
Theological Seminary of America, Jan. 12, 1997.
