96308 "General Assembly News" Wrap-up Sold Out;
Dissemination of Assembly Information Hits All-time High
by Jerry L. Van Marter
LOUISVILLE, Ky.--The Office of the General Assembly has announced that the
entire 350,000 print run of the wrap-up edition of "The General Assembly
News" has been sold. The 12-page newpaper summarizing the 208th General
Assembly, edited by Jane Mead, manager of the General Assembly newsroom,
and published by OGA, came out three days after the Assembly adjourned July
6.
OGA also reported that more than 330,000 copies of "Assembly in
Brief," the eight-page bulletin insert-size Assembly summary, have been
sold. "Assembly in Brief" was a joint publication of OGA and the
Presbyterian News Service and was edited by the Rev. Vicki Fogel Mykles of
Fort Collins, Colo.
The combined circulation of the wrap-up and "Assembly in Brief " is
the highest on record.
In all, the General Assembly newsroom staff produced 130 news releases
during the weeklong Assembly, unofficially the second or third highest
volume in Assembly history.
Electronically, all news releases were posted on PresbyNet, the
Presbyterian Church's computer communication network, and on the Internet.
General Assembly news releases were accessed via the Internet 24,000 times
during the week of the Assembly, according to PresbyNet officials.
PresbyNet figures were not available.
PresbyTel, the denomination's toll-free telephone information service,
logged 6,000 requests for Assembly-related information during the Assembly,
also an all-time high. And daily summaries of the Assembly recorded by the
Presbyterian News Service for VoiceLine, PresbyTel's prerecorded
information service, were listened to 12,000 times during the Assembly,
also a record.
Other General Assembly summaries, for which distribution figures are
not yet available, were published by "Presbyterians Today" and "Church &
Society" magazines.
