     The Mountain Retreat Association (Montreat) board of directors has 
appointed William J.  Messina as director of development for the North 
Carolina conference center.  He began his new work Sept. 9. 
     A certified fund-raising executive, Messina was most recently vice 
president of development and college relations for Spring Hill College in 
Mobile, Ala.  He has also done development work for Augusta State 
University in Georgia, the University of Georgia, Michigan State University 
and the University of Florida.

     On Sept. 9, the Rev. Ronald C. White was installed as dean of the 
seminary and vice president of academic affairs for San Francisco 
Theological Seminary (SFTS) in a daylong celebration on the campus here. 
     Marking the beginning of SFTS' 125th anniversary year, installation 
events included the opening convocation and service of installation, 
followed by a luncheon attended by more than 150 area church leaders, SFTS 
students, faculty and guests, and an afternoon dialogue with White, 
moderated by the Rev.  Jack Rogers, vice president for the seminary's 
Southern California program and professor of theology.
