EUB church anniversary to be marked
with three-day Dayton celebration

by Edwin H. Maynard*

The 50th anniversary of the creation of the Evangelical
United Brethren Church (EUB) will be marked with a Nov. 16-18
celebration at United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio.
Officially constituted on Nov. 16, 1946, the EUB church is a
forerunner of the United Methodist Church. The celebration will
include the annual meeting of the Historical Society of the United
Methodist Church.
The opening session, on the afternoon of Nov. 16, will
include a re-enactment of the handclasp between Bishops Arthur R.
Clippinger, United Brethren, and John S. Stamm, Evangelical, that
sealed the 1946 union of the two denominations at Johnstown, Pa.
The 1996 service will include the hymns and liturgy used in
Johnstown.
The keynote address will be delivered at a banquet by retired
Bishop Paul W. Milhouse who was a delegate to the Uniting
Conference in Johnstown.
At subsequent sessions, speakers will explore various aspects
of the 22-year life of the EUB denomination until union with the
Methodist Church in 1968. Topics will include the EUB
understanding of ministry, the 1962 Confession of Faith, women and
missions and the church's piety and hymnody.
Preacher for the Sunday worship service will be retired
Bishop Wayne K. Clymer, who was ordained in the Evangelical
Church.
A bus tour will take conference registrants to historic sites
in Dayton, which served as EUB headquarters and was the
headquarters city of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ
prior to 1956. Dayton continues to house United Methodist
offices, notably the General Council on Ministries, which will
host one of the functions.
Sponsors of the event are the historical society and the
Center for the Evangelical United Brethren Heritage. The center
encourages research, maintains archives and publishes a newsletter
from the campus of United Theological Seminary. United was an EUB
seminary prior to formation of the United Methodist Church.
A parallel celebration will be held Nov. 14-17 in Johnstown,
Pa., in the church where the 1946 uniting service took place.
